Turning Doubt Into Action: How Black Guns Matter Defied the Odds

I want to share something real with you today.

When I first started Black Guns Matter, people told me, “You shouldn’t be doing this in anti-gun cities, especially where the laws are straight-up unconstitutional.”

Folks doubted me, saying it was too risky to carry a firearm and do this work in cities like Baltimore or Chicago, where gun control is everywhere.

But guess what? The first city I planned to hit was Baltimore, known for its anti-gun laws, and I wasn’t backing down.

The instructor I asked to travel with me backed out at the last minute. He wasn’t comfortable with my vision. But honestly, that moment turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to Black Guns Matter.

Instead of letting that stop me, I decided to work with local instructors in the cities we were visiting. I focused on outreach and marketing, building relationships, and showing up. I’d get the crowd in the door, then leave them with an instructor who could keep the momentum going even after we left.

And you know what? It worked. Way better than I expected. The community got real value, and the movement began growing in ways I never imagined. It pushed Black Guns Matter beyond just another organization and turned it into a movement that empowered people, especially urban communities, to embrace their gun rights.

Fast forward to today: Black Guns Matter has been cited in a historic Supreme Court victory, featured on the Showtime Network, and even made the cover of Recoil Magazine. And that's just scratching the surface.

Here’s the key takeaway: When your purpose is solid, when your vision is crystal clear, and when your passion is real, the obstacles won’t stop you. The naysayers? They’re just noise. You’ve gotta do the work, stay true to your purpose, and keep pushing forward.

If you’re feeling the same drive and determination to make your own impact, I want to invite you to join us in the Solutionary 9. We’re gaining clarity on our goals, refocusing on our purpose, and exploring how purpose fuels action and leads to success—no matter what that looks like for you.

Let’s keep pushing.
